Truth Will Prevail

/

My school’s motto was “Truth will prevail.” But not on Facebook, where users are subjected to a never-ending stream of utter nonsense. About a third of the posts I see each day seem to have been created ex-nihilo with the sole purpose of generating outrage or fear, and consequently, of generating clicks and advertising revenue.

The image below is one example. It does not show an authentic United Nations document. It is an entirely fabricated graphic that has circulated online as part of a broader “New World Order” conspiracy narrative associated first with Agenda 21 and now with Agenda 2030.

Fact-checking organisations including AFP Fact Check, AAP FactCheck and Full Fact have reported for years that the graphic is not a genuine and that the listed objectives do not appear in any list of UN Sustainable Development Goals. See here for one example:

https://factcheck.afp.com/hoax-circulates-about-united-nations-mission-goals

But the best way to check is to read the real Agenda 2030 goals. They can be found here: Official UN Agenda 2030 resources:

https://sdgs.un.org/goals

and

https://sdgs.un.org/sites/default/files/publications/21252030%20Agenda%20for%20Sustainable%20Development%20web.pdf

The UN’s Agenda 2030 consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • No Poverty;
  • Zero Hunger;
  • Good Health and Well-Being;
  • Quality Education;
  • Gender Equality;
  • Clean Water and Sanitation;
  • Affordable and Clean Energy;
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth;
  • Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure;
  • Reduced Inequalities;
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities;
  • Responsible Consumption and Production;
  • Climate Action;
  • Life Below Water;
  • Life on Land;
  • Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions;
  • and Partnerships for the Goals.

It is hard to see how anyone could object to any of these goals, which possibly explains why, instead of stating and addressing them honestly, anti-UN conspiracy theorists decided it would be easier just to make something up to generate outrage, knowing that almost no one would be bothered to check.

The image completely misrepresents the actual Sustainable Development Goals. Claims such as One World Government, End of Nations, One World Army, End of All Private Property, Microchipping for Health, Government-Raised Children, End of Animal Ownership, and AI Courts are deliberately designed to generate alarm and fear. They not are not contained in the UN agenda, nor in any UN documents.

Don’t be complicit in inventing or passing on untruths. Truth will prevail when social media users care more about honesty and accuracy than they do about clicks and popularity.
