In June 2026, outgoing US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released declassified documents which she claimed implicate Dr Anthony Fauci in the origins of the COVID pandemic.

Specifically, she alleged:

• Dr Fauci knowingly funded gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) resulting in the creation & subsequent leak of COVID-19

• Dr Fauci manipulated intelligence assessments to conceal his involvement

• Dr Fauci lied to Congress

• Dr Fauci used a ‘Deep State playbook’ to suppress dissent among his peers

Gabbard's Fauci Fizzer

The documents Gabbard linked to as support for these claims instead disprove her allegations.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded coronavirus research at EcoHealth Alliance (EHA), an American non-profit organisation that studies emerging diseases. EHA was partnered with the WIV (& others) for the study of coronaviruses in China. Money from the NIH grant was directed to the WIV via EHA.

Dr Fauci was Director of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at the time, not the NIH. He was not personally responsible for the allocation & oversight of research funding (the NIH grant process is a complex one, conducted via multiple committees, not one person). He had no oversight or involvement the administration of EcoHealth Alliance.

There is no evidence that US-funded work created COVID-19. There is no evidence that viruses studied under NIH/EcoHealth funding could have evolved into SARS-CoV-2.

Gabbard cites documents & internal communications from the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in support of her claim that Dr Fauci pushed the intelligence community (IC) ‘to endorse a natural, animal origin to hide his dangerous research.’

Those documents exonerate him & contradict her.

Dr Fauci took an interest in intelligence briefings, but did not hand pick the staff responsible, did not steer an intelligence assessment and was kept at arm’s length by the IC.

Gabbard misrepresents Dr Fauci’s June 2024 testimony to the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, in which he corrects the misapprehension that he had no communication with the IC during the pandemic. On the contrary, he clearly states that he was briefed by intelligence agencies about possible lab activity after COVID origin investigations began.

Gabbard accuses Dr Fauci of ‘lies, disinformation & censorship’ as part of a wider scheme to shield himself from scrutiny while maintaining his influence. The documents she cites show the opposite.

Dr Fauci has testified before Congress on numerous occasions, and endured relentless scrutiny from lawmakers and the press. There is no evidence he pressured or censored any of his staff, or anyone in the intelligence community.
